Bass boat that distinctively New England breed able agile - hard chine - full keel cuddy cabin large cockpit single engine soft top stable short chop tide rip Narragansett Bay   Quicks Hole  Sow and Pigs - Cuttyhunk  Chatham morning mist salt water scents and of course Striped Bass... There are bass boats and then there are BASS BOATS.
The Brownell Boat Yard turned out premium sport fishing boats for 50 years. Brownell boats are highly prized for their functional design, solid construction and excellent sea keeping qualities. The 26 foot bass boat is arguably their best and most popular model.
The history dates back to 1957 when the noted New England design firm of Eldredge McInnis drew the lines for a 26 bass boat to be built by Brownelle Boat Works of Mattapoisett, Mass. This design is the predecessor of the popular Fortier 26 bass boats. We are talking here about a class of boats that evolved to meet the needs of fishermen who foraged for striped bass along the rocky shores of New England. Because the boat is such a stable fishing platform and handles short choppy seas well, in recent years the New England bass boat has become a favorite of rockfish anglers on the Chesapeake as well.
Jolly Tar, designed by Eldredge McInnis, was built by David Fred Brownell of Mattapoisett, MA, in 1972 as a 26 open cockpit cuddy cabin Bass Boat. The hull is composite construction, diagonal double planked mahogany sheathed with FRP epoxy resin. The keel, frames, beams, and stem are white oak. The transom is teak. The interior and helm area are finished in Herreshoff fashion with bright work mahogany accents.  A 2003 survey found the hull condition to be in excellent condition. Present condition is excellent, and with proper maintenance will remain in excellent condition for many years to come.
Forward is a cuddy cabin with Vee-berths., and an electric head. The cockpit is large with a starboard forward helm station with jump seat, convertible style soft top with side curtains and an aft drop curtain (interchangeable with a drop screen if the bugs are bad).  At the aft helm station is a tiller and engine controls. The engine box is sound proofed and makes excellent seating or a handy work surface.
Jolly Tar is maintained in proper Bristol fashion. While an extremely able fish craft, the present owner also enjoys her as an elegant ride to cruise the nooks and crannies of our New England coast and rivers as a picnic boat. Jolly Tar was proudly awarded the third place prize in the 2008 Essex antique boat show and competition.
